Tepper Takayama Fine Arts

Internationally acclaimed photojournalist Evandro Teixeira was born in Jequie, Bahia, Brazil, on December 25, 1935. He studied with photographer Jose Medeiros of O Cruzeiro, and started his non-stop career with Jornal do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro in 1958, becaming its Photo Editor. He has covered major stories locally and globally including coup d'etats, political uprisings, Carnival, indigenous peoples, social events, and sports, (including the Olympics in Athens and again in Brazil, 2016). He has been the official photographer of a succession of presidents, and has exhibited extensively both at home and abroad. His images are in the permanent collections of Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge, MA, Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Sao Paulo, Museum of Fine Arts (Kunsthaus), Zurich, Museo de Arte Moderna La Tertulia, Cali, Colombia, Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA, among others. His bibliography includes Fotojornalismo, Canudos, Os Sertoes, 68:Destinos. He is the subject of a full-length movie and a legendary figure for his photojournalism and his dedication to recording the history, culture and folklore of his native region of the arid interior of Bahia state. His numerous awards include the Premio Especial da Unesco (1993), Nikon's PrÍmios do Concurso Internacional (1991 and 1975) and the PrÍmio Brasil Fotografia Especial (2015), among others.
