Brazilian, b. 1966, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Renan Cepeda born in Rio de Janeiro in 1966, has been a photographer since 1988. Cepeda's schooling in photography was essentially in photojournalism, as a staff member of the Brazilian newspaper Jornal do Brasil between 1988 and 1993, working in all departments from fashion, breaking news, portraiture, and major sports events. Since 1993 he has been a free-lance potographer for Brazil's most important magazines, including Veja, Epoca, Isto E, Elle, Exame, and Folha de Sao Paulo. From 1993 to 1995 he was the correspondent for the French agency Sipa-Presse.
Cepeda, concentrating on fine art photography, is best known for his research on unusual techniques such as infra-red photography as exemplified by the series Pichacoes. This series received the International Agfa Photo Award of 2004, a grant from the National Historical and Artistic Foundation of Pernambuco, in 2004, and the Acquisition Prize of the Salao de Santo Andre, Sao Paulo, in 2005. It was shown in Paris in December 2005, and at the Museu de Arte Contemporanea de Olinda, in Olinda, Pernambuco, Brasil, the first part of a solo traveling exhibition. Cepeda was recently featured in Magic Realism, an exhibition at Tepper Takayama Fine Arts.
Cepeda is also a consultant and producer of photographic events. His works are in the collections of Joaquim Paiva, Fundacion Luz and Alfonso Castillo, BANESPA, BNDES, Antoni Galvao Passos Araujo, Robin Rich, Martha and Atsuyoshi Takayama, and the Salao de Santo Andre. He maintains his workshop in the historic Carioca neighborhood of Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro.
